Beacon-based navigation Android app for the visually-impaired

Role: Project Lead, Android Development

This project was for the Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) course at Korea University. In this particular year, students taking HCI courses from four of the top universities in South Korea (SNU, KAIST, Korea University, Yonsei University) were invited to participate in a competition called SK Creative Challenge, which was hosted at HCI-Korea conference.

The process was, students first competed within their schools and then the best teams from each school were invited to present and compete at HCI-Korea.

Among 5+ teams in my class, my project received the highest score and was thereby chosen to represent Korea University. My project received an award for coming in at 3rd place among 8 finalists from four schools.

There is a story to this project. On the day I was heading to its first class, I saw a blind person struggling to cross the road without any guidance. This inspired me to come up with an idea to develop a beacon-based guidance system for the blind. I pitched this idea to my teammates and convinced them of the plan and feasibility. I ended up leading the project and the development of the Android app.

One of my favorite (produest) moments from this project was when I visited the centre for the blind with my team, interviewed the blind people at the centre, collected their feedback on the features/interactions and used them to design our app.

Here is a demo I produced.

Here are the slides and poster I used at HCI-Korea’16.
